Inspired by the Jewish values of social justice, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) fosters literacy among underserved students in public elementary schools by engaging the community as volunteer tutors. Each year, JCL recruits and trains approximately 400 volunteer reading tutors and places them in public elementary schools and afterschool programs throughout the Bay Area to work individually with struggling young readers. JCL's goal is to help ensure that all children can read by the end of third grade; if kids can't read by then, studies show that their options for the rest of their lives are severely limited.
